computing commuting miles for employee business expense?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

How would you compute commuting miles for the Form 2106, if you were a salesman, had two jobs, for the first part of the year had an in home office, and for the second part of the year had an office 10 miles away but didn’t go there every day, some days just worked at home, some days went directly to client. Thanks for your help!
We do have written records for all miles driven during the year. When there is an in home office, what miles are commuting?

How to survive commuting to Dallas?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

OK, so my situaton is that I will be living in the DFW area in a few months. My friend wants me to move in with her, and I would love to, considering I’ve never lived in a huge city before and it’d be great to not go home to an empty apartment.

The problem is that I have heard horror stories of commuting in Dallas. Evidently the interstate between Fort Worth and Dallas is just a very long parking lot. My friend lives in Grand Prairie, and on Mapquest it doesn’t seem far at all (I’m of course not factoring in traffic). So my question(s), to get to the point:

1.) How long would I be on the road from Grand Prairie to downtown Dallas, assuming I left to arrive at work at 8AM.

2.) Where should I live that would minimize the commute BUT remain affordable ($400 – $750 range; yes that is probably very naive)?

3.) Is Dallas’ light rail system any good?

For figurative bonus points, any suggestions on parts of town that won’t get me shot would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks y’all!
