Ever since the dawn of man, mobility has been central to our growth and freedom as a civilization. There have always been places to go and people to see, greener pastures, bluer skies and undiscovered lands. But what about the future of mobility? We ask some of the great thinkers of our generation how people will get around in 80 years. From the hope of hydrogen to the dream of space exploration, these futurists, scientists, artists and forward-thinkers ponder the possibilities of future transportation. Watch and see if youre ready for the surprises the experts are predicting.

Robert W. Poole Jr. was one of the founders of Reason Enterprises, which began publishing Reason with its January 1971 issue (the magazine had started in 1968, under the direction of Lanny Friedlander). He co-founded the nonprofit Reason Foundation in 1978 with Manny Klausner and Tibor Machan and has held many titles with the magazine, including editor, managing editor, executive editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher. He remains on the board of the Reason Foundation today and is the Searle Freedom Trust Transportation Fellow and Director of Transportation Policy. “Rand really inspired a lot of people who otherwise might have become conservatives, like me,” says Poole. “If you go back and look at surveys that were done of libertarians in the 1960s, ’70s, and even the ’80s, and asked what single book or thought leader most inspired you to become a libertarian, it was always Rand by a large large majority—always a plurality and usually a majority.” Approximately six minutes. Interview by Michael C. Moynihan, camera by Dan Hayes, and editing by Hawk Jensen. This is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand. Watch the first part of the series, Rand-O-Rama: The Long Shelf Life of Ayn Rand at www.youtube.com Watch a promo trailer for the series at www.youtube.com Go to reason.tv for more information and downloadable versions of all videos.

The bus stop at school that goes to my house stops right infront of my apt complex. It’s a 45 min drive depending on traffic. My car takes $25 to fill the gas tank and traveling to school with public transportation is $15 a week. Is it worth it or should I just drive? I never took public transportation before should I be worried?

ULTra is a battery-driven, 200-mpg-equivalent, elevated personal rapid transit system with many four-person vehicles. First deployment is scheduled for London Heathrow Airport in Spring 2010, to serve Heathrow’s new Terminal 5. Working as circulator transit for airports, office parks, universities, and other major activity centers, ULTra is faster than a car. In these applications, ULTra solves the “last mile problem.” Many web pages of details on Heathrow ULTra PRT can be found at: www.ultraprt.net BAA (formerly British Airports Authority) is a private-sector firm that owns and operates 7 airports including London Heathrow, the world’s third largest. The Heathrow ULTra system construction and operating costs are funded by BAA. This transit system is not government-subsidized. Music was created by Adelphoi Music and the video animation by Venture Three.

Friday, May 9th, 2008 At 5:30pm starting in Santa Monica, 28 bicyclists took surface streets to the 1-10 Fwy at Bundy and rode 0.44 miles to the I-405 N on-ramp and rode another 1.56 miles to the Santa Monica Blvd. exit during rush hour. The ramp to the I-405 N was a steep grade and 0.65 miles in length. Riders spanned a total of 2.0 freeway miles. The group of riders also hung a 20′x6′ banner on the 17th street overpass overlooking the eastbound I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica that read RIDE A BIKE YOU’D BE HOME BY NOW. The sign remained in place for over 48 hours. Mission While the ride’s political stance and agenda was neutral, many participants invoked the group’s collective motto: “If you rode a bicycle, you’d be home by now!” — a statement against oil dependency, in support of sustainable living and a collective critique of the Los Angeles transportation infrastructure. The riders are pointing out that in a city like Los Angeles made for cars, bicycle riders are reaching their destinations faster. Long Term Goals Members of the CRIMANIMALZ are looking for city officials to make bicycle safety a priority, not only through the creation of safe and easy places to ride, but also as a means of transportation on the city’s increasingly busy thoroughfares. With rising gas prices and a government encouraging sustainable practices, more people are expected to turn to bikes as an alternative means of transportation.
