An underwater digital camera is not just used to capture underwater memories; some professional marine photographers also use underwater digital cameras in their business. Even marine biologists and scientists use underwater digital cameras to capture marine life and thus be able to study the life and properties of the marine life. But I think it is safe to assume that you, my reader, are neither a marine scientist nor a professional photographer. Like me, you are just some photo junkie who wants to capture underwater moments and just cant figure out how without ruining your cameras.

Please listen to me when I say that even waterproof cameras cannot withstand underwater photography. To be waterproof is to resist the water in certain levels, submerging in under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.

Now if you’re really serious about using an underwater digital camera to capture those wacky and funny moments underwater, I suggest that you buy specialty cameras.

There are rarely underwater digital cameras, as cameras are electronic and cannot withstand water and water pressure. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. These casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

If you are shooting with your underwater digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best images underwater.

Remember that as you farther under water, light diffuses. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than those images you took while on land – this is because of the light diffusion the red spectrum seems darker. To avoid this, use white balance come up with natural colors. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. Be sure to check your underwater digital camera’s viewfinder to check the right picture angle and size that you want.

An underwater digital camera with its built-in flash will produce marine show phenomenon. It is a phenomenon wherein your pictures come out as blurry and with white particles floating above it, to avoid this phenomenon it is advisable to use external flash for your underwater digital camera.

Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the case. Make sure that no grain of sand or piece of hair is stuck in between the seal to make sure that water will not permeate the case and thus wet your camera in the process. It is also advisable to put silica gel or two inside the case of your underwater digital camera as long as they don’t disturb the camera’s operation. (Silica gel will keep the moisture from forming inside your camera case.)

Most underwater digital cameras come with optional lenses. Don’t be afraid to add these lenses to your underwater digital camera kit. Macro lenses will help you capture small things without getting too close and startling your subject.

Also, remember to always wash of salt when you’ve used it under salt water. If the salts are not washed off, in time they will crystallize; act as sands and cause leaks for your camera case. In cases when sands seem to get into the case, they are better washed off with streams of water.

Check out Sony, Nikon and Canon’s website for available underwater cases for your digital cameras.

A digital camera, as opposed to a film or videotape camera, uses an electronic sensor to transform images (or video) into electronic data. Modern digital cameras are typically multifunctional and the same device can take photographs, video, and/or sound.

In 2005, digital cameras are starting to push traditional film cameras out of many markets. Shrinking device sizes have recently allowed miniaturized digital cameras to be included in multifunctional devices, such as cell phones and PDAs.

Classification

Digital cameras can be classified into several groups:

Video cameras

    * Professional video cameras such as those used in television and movie production. These typically have multiple images sensors (one per color) to enhance resolution and color gamut. Professional video cameras usually do not have a built-in VCR or microphone.

    * Camcorders used by amateurs. These are a combination of camera and VCR to create an all-in-one production unit. They generally include a microphone to record sound, and feature a small LCD to watch the video during filming and playback.

Still cameras

Digital still cameras are generally characterized by the use of flash memory and USB or Fire Wire for storage and transfer.

Most have a rear LCD for reviewing photographs. They are rated in mega pixels; that is, the product of their maximum resolution dimensions. The actual transfers to a host computer are commonly carried out using the USB mass storage device class (so that the camera appear as a drive) or using the Picture Transfer Protocol and its derivatives.

All use a CCD (for Charged Coupled Device) which is a chip comprised of a grid of phototransistors to sense the light intensities across the plane of focus of the camera lens.

There has recently been some application of a second kind of chip, called a CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) sensor, and this chip is often differentiated from a CCD proper in that it uses less power and a different kind of light sensing material, however the differences are highly technical and many manufacturers still consider the CMOS chip a charged coupled device. For our purposes, a chip sensor is a CCD.

    * Standard Digital Cameras: This encompasses most digital cameras. They are characterized by great ease in operation and easy focusing; this design allows for limited motion picture capability. They have an extended depth of field.

This allows objects at multiple depths to be in focus simultaneously, which accounts for much of their ease of focusing. It is also part of the reason professional photographers find their images flat or artificial-looking. They excel in landscape photography and casual use.

    * Digital SLRs typically have a sensor nine times larger than that of a standard digital camera, and are targeted at professional photographers and enthusiasts. They resemble ordinary professional cameras in most ways, with replaceable flash and lens components, which give the user maximum control over light, focus and depth of field.

They are also bulkier and more expensive than their casual-use oriented counterparts. They are superb for portraiture and artistic photography because they can be customized for various applications with a comprehensive range of exchangeable lenses.

Professional modular digital camera systems

High-end digital camera backs used by professionals are usually separate devices from the camera bodies which they are used with. (This is because most of the large- and medium-format camera systems in professional use at the time that digital capture overtook film as the professional’s medium of choice were modular in nature, i.e. the camera body had multiple lenses, viewfinders, winders and backs available for use with it to fit different needs.)

Since the first backs were introduced there have been three main methods of “capturing” the image, each based on the hardware configuration of the particular back.

The first method is often called “Single Shot,” in reference to the number of times the camera’s sensor is exposed to the light passing through the camera lens.

Single Shot capture systems use either one CCD with a Bayer filter stamped onto it or three separate CCDs (one each for the primary additive colors Red, Green and Blue) which are exposed to the same image via a beam splitter.

The second method is referred to as “Multi-Shot” because the sensor is exposed to the image in a sequence of three or more openings of the lens aperture. There are several methods of application of the multi-shot technique.

The most common originally was to use a single CCD with three filters (once again red, green and blue) passed in front of the sensor in sequence to obtain the additive color information.

Another multiple shot method utilized a single CCD with a Bayer filter but actually moved the physical location of the sensor chip on the focus plane of the lens to “stitch” together a higher resolution image than the CCD would allow otherwise. A third version combined the two methods without stamping a Bayer filter onto the chip.

The third method is called “Scan” because the sensor moves across the focus plane much like the sensor of a desktop scanner.

These CCDs are usually referred to as “sticks” rather than “chips” because they utilize only a single row of pixels (more properly “photosites”) which are again “stamped” with the Bayer filter.

The choice of method for a given capture is of course determined largely by the subject matter. It is usually inappropriate to attempt to capture a subject which moves (like people or objects in motion) with anything but a single shot system.

However, the higher color fidelity and larger file sizes and resolutions available with multi-shot and scan-backs make them attractive for commercial photographers working with stationary subjects and large-format photographs.

Webcams

    * Webcams are digital cameras attached to computers, used for video conferencing or other purposes. Webcams can capture full-motion video as well, and some models include microphones or zoom ability.

These devices range in price from very inexpensive to expensive higher-end models; many complex webcams have a servo-controlled base capable of tracking facial motion with the help of software.

Interpolation

Image color or resolution interpolation is used unless the camera uses a beam splitter single-shot approach, three-filter multi-shot approach, or Foveon X3 sensor.

The software specific to the camera interprets the information from the sensor to obtain a full color image. This is because in digital images, each pixel must have three values for luminous intensity, one each for the red, green, and blue channels. A normal sensor element cannot simultaneously record these three values.

The Bayer filter pattern is typically used. A Bayer filter pattern is a 2×2 pattern of light filters, with green ones at opposite corners and red and blue elsewhere.

The high proportion of green takes advantage of properties of the human visual system, which is determines brightness mostly from green and is far more sensitive to brightness than to hue or saturation.

Sometimes a 4-color filter pattern is used, often involving 2 different hues of green. This provides a wider color gamut, but requires a slightly more complicated interpolation process.

The luminous intensity color values not captured for each pixel can be interpolated (or guessed at) from the values of adjacent pixels which represent the color being calculated.

In some cases, extra resolution is interpolated into the image by shifting photosites off of a standard grid pattern so that photosites are adjacent to each other at 45 degree angles, and all three values are interpolated for “virtual” photosites which fall into the spaces at 90 degree angles from the actual photosites.

Connectivity

Many digital cameras can connect directly to a computer to transfer data. USB is the most widely used method, though some have a Fire wire port.

Integration

Some devices, like mobile phones integrates digital cameras. Mobile phone cameras are much more sold than standalone digital ones.

Storage

Digital cameras need memory to store data. The higher one goes in pixel size, the more memory will be needed. Cameras use a removable memory card to store data, but the cheapest and smallest cameras may simply use fixed internal memory instead. Some cameras come with inbuilt memory as well.

Autonomous devices

An autonomous device, such as a PictBridge printer, operates without need of a computer. The camera connects to the printer, which then downloads and prints its images. Some DVD recorders and television sets can read memory cards too.

In 2008, BBC cameras filmed two Swedish sisters throwing themselves into traffic on the M6. When it was shown on BBC One, nearly 7 million viewers were glued to their screens, and millions more watched it later on YouTube. The footage was shocking. One previewer wrote “On no account miss this documentary. It opens with what is perhaps the most extraordinary footage I’ve seen on TV”. But this amazing footage was only part of an even more incredible story, one which could not be told at the time for legal reasons. Now, two years later, this documentary reveals the full story of the hours just before the cameras captured that motorway footage, and the even more chilling story of what happened over next 72 hours, which left one of the sisters fleeing the scene of a crime, after she had stabbed a man through the chest. Those who were at the centre of this fascinating legal case, including the police and Crown prosecution service, reveal the complex issues involved in both bringing charges and taking this disturbing case to trial. A leading criminal psychiatrist, Dr. Nigel Eastman, explains the difficulties the judicial system has in achieving justice and deciding punishment when dealing with mental illness. He explains the possible causes of the Broadcast on: BBC One, 10:35pm Tuesday 10th August 2010

When the optics company from Wetzlar in Hesse brought its first 35 mm camera onto the market in 1924, the compact, reliable device was an instant success and soon went into large-scale production. It marked the birth of a new genre in photography and the Leica became a legend. The highly accurate lens made it a highly prized camera for professionals and ambitious hobby photographers. But when digital cameras began their world-wide conquest a decade ago, Leica stuck to film. That decision put the company in financial difficulties. But recently it has entered the digital business. Under its owner and new CEO, Austrian entrepreneur Andreas Kaufmann, Leica is focussing on new markets and target groups for a profitable future, as Andreas Hewel reports.

If you have a passion for photography but don’t exactly have a lot of cash, finding a suitable camera may be hard for you. Digital cameras don’t come cheap because of the numerous features involved that are lacking in the traditional manual camera. But you don’t have to fret about how much you have to cash out because a discount digital camera is actually available.

A discount digital camera is a camera that is being sold for a lesser price because either it has already gone out of fashion or the manufacturer has already produced a more advanced model. Discount digital cameras come in two kinds – brand-new and used. For some, it is better to buy a specific camera several months to a year after its release because it is cheaper. Though new cameras offer a wider range of features, a discount digital camera offers close to the same features though they can be a bit out of date. You can find discount digital cameras from Discount Camera in the San Francisco Bay area.

Discount digital cameras surfaced when digital cameras broke into the single-use trade. This means that products are used only once and then returned. With a single-use camera, the amount of pictures to be taken is set on a certain limit. After using the camera, it is then sold for a lesser price. The popularity of this market eventually led to the dropping of the prices of newly released cameras. Consumers are predisposed to buy cheaper cameras due to tight budgets. Only avid photographers splurge on highly expensive cameras for better image quality.

The drop of the price point resulted in a fierce competition, which is inevitable in any consumer market. Most manufacturers today compensate through a barrage of advertisements. Features are either highlighted or omitted, depending on the target audience. So it is tasking to select the best digital camera. Even choosing a discount digital camera is difficult. What you have to remember is the reason why you are buying a camera at all. If it is just for recreational use, then you will find a lot of cameras that will suit you. They are relatively cheap compared to high-end professional digital cameras.

When choosing a discount digital camera, you have to check for cuts and scratches if it is used. You also need to measure its performance; image quality, type of battery and media, zoom performance and megapixels. Color sharpness is important in any digital camera. Your only issue with it is choosing the camera with the best image quality that is within your budget. Ensure that the batteries you need aren’t expensive or if the camera needs a special type of battery to be operational. You also have to consider the memory stick or card that comes with your camera. Take into account its compatibility with your equipment. With zoom performance, you only need to check the optical zoom. Digital zoom is equally important but not as much as optical zoom. If your camera has a high optical zoom, this prevents your image from getting broken into minute pixels when you enlarge it. The degree of megapixels assures you of the quality of the image.

To find a discount digital camera, you only have to scope out your local area. By being resourceful, you just need a little cash to support a lifetime hobby.

In this presentation, we will focus on taking a closer look at several interesting segments of film footage from the NASA archives. All the footage shown and analyzed here was originally shot by NASA astronauts during the Apollo missions (1968-1972) on 16mm film, using what was known as the “Data Acquisition Camera” – the “DAC”. The Maurer “DAC” cameras were modified variable frame rate 16mm motion picture film cameras used by the various Apollo crews throughout their missions to film scenes of interest through the windows of the spacecraft, interior spacecraft activities, as well as to shoot exterior footage during lunar surface “moonwalk” operations and Low-Earth Orbit or Trans-Earth-Coast EVA ops in cis-lunar space. I included a bit more information on the Apollo DAC camera in the brief writeup I did attached to the earlier teaser/trailer video for this presentation – www.youtube.com FRAME-STACKING In the last half of this presentation (starting at 4:30), I show various examples where I employ an enhancement technique known as “frame-stacking” against the raw DAC archive footage. In certain cases, frame-stacking can be employed to forensically attack the raw frames of film and produce an enhanced composite still-frame of a stable (or motion-stabilized) scene. It should be noted that “stacking” is by no means a new method of enhancing video or motion picture film footage. It is a digital enhancement technique that has been around a lot longer than most people would …

Local media exposed what was supposed to be a secret maiden flight & demonstration. The UAV has onboard cameras that the report says have the capability to look into your home (through the walls & ceiling) and see what the occupants are doing. It is likely the cameras use a combination of IR, radar, and a form of ‘backscatter’ X-Ray. Privacy rights are now dead. Does your local gestapo have one flying over YOUR home?

Crime continues to rise not just in a physical sense but also in the world of white-collar business. Security cameras have become a worthy ally to many in the detection and prevention of crime. A simple observation of the city will tell you security cameras are everywhere these days.

Once used in their infancy as a traffic-monitoring device, remote security cameras are becoming the weapons of choice in the war against terrorism and crime around the world.

Wireless Security Cameras

If you need to partially conceal your cameras from view, wireless security cameras are the way to go. Wireless security cameras have become very popular because they can literally be put anywhere you want since you don’t have to worry about wires.

Additionally, wireless security cameras are becoming more and more affordable as the technology makes leaps and bounds- both in terms of the cutting edge new features and in the manufacturing and design process.

Home Security Cameras

Like most technology, the cost of home security has come down in recent years and the outdoor security cameras are no exception. With the right set-up the signal from your security cameras can be fed to your television for convenience – you don’t have to go to a special monitor to see the picture.

The best way that parents can protect their children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and still have a life is to install security cameras as part of their security systems.

Home security cameras won’t just catch the worst possible acts of child violence and abuse, but also irresponsible babysitters who may not be cruel but are far too careless to be given the responsibility of watching your child.

Security Camera Location

To ensure the most effective surveillance of your home, the placement of your security cameras is of utmost importance. The proper placement of security cameras coupled with a recorder, permits you to maintain a record of many activities in your home, and you will be able to easily identify a person by the clothes he or she is wearing.

Don’t Bust the Budget

For those who are on a budget and can’t afford or don’t want to spend the time setting up a security system or hire someone else to do it, there are temporary measures you can use. You can consider using fake security cameras for the job if money is a major consideration in your home security budget, and you just can’t afford the real thing yet.

Whatever the variety and model that exist in the market for real surveillance cameras, dummy security cameras are there with the same exact look and feel.

Dummy security cameras can be fitted to the interior of your home as well as mounted on the exterior. You can use dummy cameras in various places on your lawn or patio, which can act as a sort of “scarecrow” for would-be thieves.

Out Door Cameras

For the best security system possible, you can have outdoor security cameras installed. Your outdoor security cameras can come with sunshades to protect the equipment from too much sunlight during daytime.

A large number of exterior cameras are weather proof, waterproof and some are even “hammer” proof. Some of the more sophisticated outdoor security cameras have an infrared option, which enables you to see what’s going on in the dark.

Security at School

The surveillance cameras allow school security personnel to do more job-specific work, which saves money in the long run since the mundane tasks will be performed by the security system. As mentioned, one of the best features about wireless security cameras are that they can be easily installed almost anywhere.

The cameras deter crime and may lead some students to confess to infractions that weren’t even caught on the security cameras.

Remote Cameras

Furthermore, remote security cameras are being used more and more to watch the habits of people in crowded areas, subway stations, airports and others to try to stop a terrorist attack before it happens. Especially active in purchasing business security cameras are large casinos such as in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

In conclusion there is no doubt that society is still getting used to the presence of security cameras and there are many that don’t like them. However home and office security cameras and basic surveillance tips will greatly improve the safety of you and your loved ones at home and on the job.

Sunshine Daydream is an unreleased movie shot at the Grateful Dead’s 1972 Veneta, Oregon concert to benefit the Springfield Creamery in nearby Springfield, Oregon. The film is sometimes shown at small film festivals, and bootleg recordings of it have circulated on VHS and DVD and as digital downloads. The concert, recorded on August 27, 1972, was filmed using four 16 mm cameras, in the woods of the Oregon Coast Range foothills, on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair. Originally even more cameras had been planned, under an ambitious scheme: “The plot was to develop a signature visual style of representing the band: a camera for each of the 16 channels (at least!) emphasizing the visual kinetics of the music making itself as well as the enormous open communication within the band.” Ken Kesey and old cohort Ken Babbs emceed the concert. The Dead played all afternoon and into the dark after an opening set by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The title of the film is taken from the coda section of the Dead song “Sugar Magnolia”.

So you’ve finally decided to install a camera security system in your home? Great! But how do you know which is the right system for you? There are many different options available and many different factors to consider such as use, number, or location. It might seem a little overwhelming when you get down to the nitty-gritty and you may lose a few hairs along the way as a result, so to preserve your head of hair, we have set up a brief guide to help get you going.

There are at least seven main types of cameras that you can install in your home: day/night cameras, dummy security cameras, wireless cameras, hidden cameras, dome cameras, IP cameras, and bullet cameras. Each one will now be described so you can get an idea of what option will suit you best.

1) Day/Night Cameras: One of the most popular options, day/night cameras are able to capture high-resolution in images even in low lighting, such as in moonlight or streetlight. Without an infrared light, they cannot capture images though in no-lighting situations because they need some source of lighting. If you are considering this option, you may want to look at infrared cameras to provide complete security.

2) Dummy Security Cameras: This is the low-budget way of at least looking like you have a camera security system. Believe it or not, dummy cameras actually have a high success rate of deterrence to possible burglars since most thieves would rather not even try their luck but would go elsewhere. If you go this route make sure to pick up a dummy camera that looks like it’s from this decade, otherwise there is no point in even getting one. Also, consider getting one with a LED light to increase the appearance of having a real camera.

3) Wireless Cameras: These cameras are a good option because they are fairly easy to install. Wireless cameras function by transmitting radio waves to some sort of receiver. They require a VCR or some video equipment to send a signal to, but that is about the only cable you will have to put in. Another advantage to these cameras is that you can more than likely install them yourself with relatively little trouble.

4) Hidden Cameras: For more information on these covert cameras, check out our other article on home surveillance. Hidden cameras are very useful for obtaining information on people acting normally, as if there is no camera present. These are particularly handy if you need to check on the babysitter or nanny to make sure they are doing what they should be doing. They are somewhat harder to install since they are covert, and may require a professional to complete the installation.

5) Dome Cameras: Usually seen in commercial situations, dome cameras are also becoming more popular. They are particularly advantageous because of the dome covering, which fits around the small fitted camera inside. This covering helps protect the camera from extreme weather situations, and as such can be used in a variety of situations such as on boats, piers, and other extreme temperature situations. They are also great because they mask the camera inside, so often times dummy cameras can be used to save on costs.

6) IP Cameras: These are becoming more common as technology improves and awareness increases. With IP cameras, instead of transmitting a radio signal, the signal is made digital so that it can be transported along a network. For this reason, IP cameras are especially useful since the live feed can be seen from a web browser. So, wherever you may be, you will be able to see what is going on around your property, which adds a comfort factor when you are out on vacation.

7) Bullet Cameras: These cameras are useful because they are lower in cost and smaller in size. They are fairly versatile as well, so they can be placed in smaller areas. They can even come in sizes as small as two inches. They are a great option to consider for low-cost budgets, but they cannot capture as much visual information as a larger option could.

In conclusion, the best way to get the right camera security system is to know what you want, and then shop for what you want. I hope that by reading this article today you have gained an insight as to what is available to you and how it can help you best.

I typically keep a camera with me, just in case… While at a meeting at E76 in Hollywood, we noticed it looked “foggy” outside. So, we opened the door and across the Hollywood Fwy, the shoulder was ablaze. So, calling a “still alarm,” the crew suited up and we were off. I typically don’t like to use small consumer style cameras, but this footage shows what is possible with even the smallest HDV canon camera. I only wish we had one of the new (not yet released) Panasonic GH1 D-SLR still/video cameras. This would have been an ideal test for it. Grab some popcorn, as this is a ten minute video. Edited in Final Cut Pro, and without any color grading – this is direct from the camera to the edit suite to YouTube.
