I am switching from dish to direct tv and would like to transfer the data from one dvr to the other. Is this possible?

Hello im a tech junky but cant figure this out. I have a vip722 dvr from dish net. and want to hook it up to my computer to edit and burn to dvd. some one told me you could from the usb port on the dvr and then to your computer. I tried but didn’t have the transfer cable i just made a homemade male to male usb to hook up. if you have any info that could help that would be great, thanks.
