For the enterprise specialty device market (Microsoft’s term for what is basically a bar-code driven semi-rugged handheld computer), this is largely a clarification and an acknowledgment that Mobile OS software needs a path forward. That’s good for those who sold into that market and have solutions currently. It will give them time to migrate those applications to the CE6 underlying model and begin to utilize the newer Silverlight® and Expression Blend® APIs to update their applications.

Of note is that Microsoft has finally done their interpretation of a direct comparison of CE and Mobile. Of interest is that a key feature of Mobile is claimed to be “Portability across devices”. This is really interesting in that Mobile applications have never really been truly “portable” the way desktop applications are due to the nature of the required specific peripherals such as bar-code readers, RFID, cameras, GPS systems or other “specialty” sensors for the “specialty device market”. This has not been a large issue as almost all application solutions are routinely customized for the specific manufacturer’s handheld device anyway whether it is Windows Mobile® or Windows CE (largely a choice of user interfaces).

The real question is why we, as developers and marketers in the specialized handheld device market are focusing on the OS user interface in the first place? The OS GUI paradigm is required for a general purpose computer, especially things like laptops and desktops. However the most successful “specialized” devices in the world all suppress the OS (even though they have one) and focus on the specific application they are intended to perform (think the Apple® iPod® for example).

I like to call this development paradigm “Expressing the Application and Suppressing the Computer” or E&S. E&S focuses on the end-user having the knowledge and experience to perform their job, and frankly not caring or being concerned about the computer portion of the handheld computer. Granted, some markets require access to the OS, such as “PDA” or the newer Smart Phones, which do require that the user/operator be able to use the OS to switch applications, transfer files, do housekeeping chores, etc. since their main purpose is to be a general computing device. But the vast majority of solutions in the “specialized devices” market do one application and one application only (by design and intent) on any given device… So why expose the all-purpose OS to the end-user?

The benefits of EA&SC are all focused on the application solution and end-user operation. EA&SC provides for very low training and deployment costs by only exposing to the operator both in the “specialized” hardware and the design of software tasks and the information required for the job function they are performing. This focus also clearly follows through to lower technical support costs. The more dedicated (in Microsoft terms “specialized”) the handheld device is to help personnel out with a given process or job function, the more likely they are to adopt and utilize it in an efficient manner thereby also lowering the initial resistance many users have to newer technology and systems.

In the longer term view of the solution, E&S also improves the payback to the stakeholders who finance the IT investment. It does this by forcing the justification and payback to be based primarily on the handheld solution improving the performance and quality of the specific business process it was intended for, not on subsequent add-ons and “best practice” metrics which never seem to materialize.

E&S is not new. Application specific (OK, specialized) handheld devices have been improving business practices for decades. An excellent example would be the UPS DIAD series which stands for the Delivery Information Acquisition Device and was developed and deployed by UPS. The DIAD has been quite successful for UPS and they consider it the integral part to their deliver process system. The current field release of the line, the DIAD IV, does not look or act like a typical PDA or enterprise handheld computer at all, because it was not meant to be… The DIAD, while based on CE, did not expose the OS at all to the operator, because the operator’s job is not to care for a computer, but to perform their daily delivery tasks efficiently to deliver our products on time.

PDAs are handheld computers originally designed as a type of personal organizer. A PDA is also called “Personal Digital Assistants”. They are also regarded as palmtops or pocket computers. PDAs have become much more versatile over the years.

Personal digital assistants have many uses. This would include being a calendar and clock or calculator. It is also suitable for access to the internet, playing computer games, receiving and sending emails, as well as word processing and typewriting. You can also include video recording and its use as a radio as well as an address book. The latest PDAs have both audio capabilities and color screens, allowing it to be used as a web browser, mobile phone or portable media player. Thus, other types of PDAs are now compatible with micro SD cards which are much smaller than standard SD memory cards and it can carry more data.

PDAs can also synchronize data with a computer. This will allow up-to-date contact information stored in software like ACT or Microsoft Outlook in order to update the database on the PDA. The data synchronization actually ensures that your personal digital assistant or PDA has a precise list of email, appointments and contacts, letting the user access similar information on the PDA as the host computer. The synchronization also prevents loss of information stored on the PDA, in case it is stolen, destroyed or lost.

If the Palm OS PDA began the age of electronics and mobile communication as well as organization, the Blackberry Personal Digital Assistant caught up quickly. Both have internet abilities and email. Blackberry PDAs are designed for short text messages, while higher-end Palm OS PDAs pose as a convergence device, often doubling as a message and phone server.

Here are some tips on choosing between a Blackberry and a Palm OS PDA. First, determine the amount of money you are willing to spend. Both operating systems that come in PDAs vary a lot in price.

Use the information you collected in testing PDAs and choose on the most precious functions a PDA should be able to offer you. Find out which gadgets are restricted in electronic shops, computer stores or cellophane shops. Find out also which ones they have in store or if they have a sale on PDAs.

If you plan on using your GPS in an automobile, there are several choices: a basic or mapping handheld receiver; a dedicated automotive receiver; a GPS with a PDA; or a Laptop GPS.

Although handheld units can be used in a car there are several disadvantages-the screen can be hard to see due to its small size and some units will need to be placed forward on the dashboard where they can get a better signal. With a basic (non-mapping) unit you can tell where you are as long as you have a paper map with you to interpret that data.

A mapping unit is the more useful choice considering with driving usually involves roads. A dedicated automotive receiver is larger than a handheld in order to accommodate a screen large enough to be seen while driving. They are powered by the car’s electrical system and because of this; they can only be used in a vehicle. Automotive units usually have voice instructions to allow you to navigate without taking your eyes off the road. Prices start at about $500 US.

A GPS with a PDA needs clear access to the sky for satellite reception. Some receivers have the antenna built in or have the capability for an external antenna. An antenna on the seat of your car may or may not work. The console is the next best place – reception may be questionable. An air vent mount is better and a windshield mount or the antenna placed all the way forward on the dashboard is better yet. The most reliable place is for an external antenna to be attached to the roof of your car.

A laptop GPS requires a CF with an external antenna, a Bluetooth GPS receiver, a mouse-type GPS receiver, or be connected via a cable to a handheld GPS unit so the receiver can be placed in a position for good reception. Of course a laptop is large, but the main advantage is a very large screen for maps. If you have a need for a laptop in your car, this may be the best choice and a mouse-type receiver is inexpensive.

If you plan on using your GPS for hiking or backpacking there are three choices, a basic handheld receiver, a mapping handheld receiver and GPS with a PDA. It is also recommended that in addition to your GPS, you should take a paper map, and magnetic compass, and extra batteries. Weight and size need to be considered when deciding which GPS to choose. A basic receiver does not have mapping abilities, however it will display your location in a format that you choose, and most likely latitude/longitude. Providing your paper maps have your chosen position format marked on them, your GPS will allow you to find your location on the map. If your maps don’t have the position format grids marked already, this is something you’ll want to do yourself. These are going to be the least expensive choices for GPS, often less than $100 US and are as accurate as more expensive units; they just don’t have as many features. The main feature they lack is mapping capability.

For hunting or fishing many handheld models include best hunting and fishing times for a given location and date. Mapping handheld receivers are often larger, heavier, and/or have shorter battery lives than basic units. Shorter battery life means carrying more extra batteries adding bulk and weight. With a mapping handheld unit you will have the benefit of having the maps displayed on your GPS. These also include other benefits such as a barometric altimeter, an electronic compass, games, and a calendar and you can plan your route ahead of time on your PC and upload it to your GPS. These units display pre-loaded maps and map detail is reflected by the size and resolution of the screen. This means that mapping units are generally larger than basic units. The downside of a GPS with a PDA is that it will drain your battery quicker and it also of the top of your PDA. Mapping units are more expensive than basic units; prices start at about $150 US unless you get one with Bluetooth capabilities which are more expensive. For fishing a chart plotter/GPS or a GPS sounder are also available. The chart plotter/GPS and GPS sounders usually have a lot of features and start at about $400 US.
