The experience of studying overseas is rife with opportunities for academic and personal development. To garner the greatest results from the experience, though, it’s important to select a university with strong academic credentials and a competitive course of study.

Whether your preference is to study in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji, the university systems of this region more than meet these requirements. Additionally, there are many study abroad programs from which to choose. Students may decide to study in New Zealand or other locations for a shorter-term summer program, a semester, a year or even for the duration of a full degree program. For those seeking to round their academic qualifications even more, there are even internship programs from which to choose. The wide selection of programs makes it easy to meet almost any academic or scheduling goals.

What Are the Benefits of Studying in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji?

Most study abroad programs share basic benefits. These programs are a distinctive addition to college applications and resumes. Electing to study in New Zealand, Australia or Fiji carries these additional benefits for students:

•Exposure to a rich and diverse culture – Classroom experience as well as downtime in a study abroad program provides numerous opportunities to experience diverse cultures, traditions and social norms. In addition, the cultures and history of these nations share similarities with that found in North America. As a result, students gain the cultural insight afforded by international travel while enjoying the commonalities of our shared heritage. Students studying in Australia or throughout the South Pacific obtain a broadened perspective on the world as well as a more grounded perspective of their place in it.

•Outstanding educational opportunities—The region boasts internationally recognized degree programs and a world class university system. Students enrolling in study abroad program in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji are privy to some of the finest courses of study in an established, respected academic setting.

•No language obstacles — Since English is the predominant language in the region, extensive language study is not a prerequisite of study in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji. Classes are taught in English, and coursework and testing is done in English. Students are free to focus on soaking up the experience rather than worry about the accuracy of translating it.

•Breathtaking surroundings – One of the more striking benefits of choosing to study in New Zealand, Australia or Fiji is exposure to some of the most unique surroundings on the planet. Whether you are drawn to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, volcanoes in New Zealand or the pristine landscapes of Fiji, the region offers students the finest of educations in an unforgettable setting.

Every single college student should study abroad. Seriously. It’s a once in a life time opportunity to immerse yourself entirely in another country. While abroad you will live, work, learn and play in a totally new and foreign environment.

Here are the top five reasons why you should travel abroad:

1. Exposure

The college experience is all about exposure to new things. In college, you are introduced to new perspectives, lifestyles and choices. Your exposure to these new ideas, identities and incidents will shape your own view of the world in ways you can’t completely calculate. If you have the opportunity to expose yourself to another country, you have to take it. Immerse yourself in this new cultural experience, and embrace difference.

2. Language development

There is no better way to learn a language than traveling abroad. When you travel abroad, you never turn off your language skills. You are forced to employee what you know on a daily basis. Your vocabulary, pronunciation and overall comfort-level can’t help but improve in such an environment. And unlike classroom learning, the language skills you will pick up while living abroad aren’t easily forgotten. Your language abilities are imprinted with practical functionality, so they tend to stick in your mind longer.

3. Add variety to your academic experience

Four years at the same institution can lag a bit. You have to mix it up when it comes to your academic development. Trying new things and taking classes outside of your comfort zone is always recommended. Physically removing yourself from your own country creates an interesting learning opportunity. You aren’t sidetracked by the typical distractions. You work hard and learn more, because it’s a more exciting and streamlined learning environment.

4. Networking

You always hear how college is all about networking. What’s cooler than having an international member in your network of associations? Imagine traveling back to the place where you studied abroad, after about ten years have passed. Wouldn’t it be nice to meet up with your local contact, who you’ve kept in touch with through the years. Friends in foreign places can come in handy in a variety of situations. Having a friend with a different perspective is a good idea, but having a friend based in another country is brilliant.

5. Travel while you learn

When you travel abroad, you get to travel! While in total school mode, you can still do fun touristy things like explore museums, architecture, places of historical interest and so on. Traveling abroad lets you play while you work, because as soon as you are out of class, you are in full discovery mode. Embrace every travel opportunity that comes your way, especially one where you are guaranteed to learn.

You owe it to yourself to travel abroad. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that’s available for a limited time only. Take full advantage of it while you still can.

I am currently a junior in high school in the U.S. First off, is it possible to study abroad your first semester of your senior year in high school? If so, do you think it would be a mistake to go senior year (since everyone says how senior year is such a memorable year and whatever)? Also, is it possible to study abroad in the U.K.?

Any information is helpful. Thank you!

Study abroad programs appear to have the learning system down. They provide the classes and the living arrangements and, of course, the country where you want to study. It’s all there.

Your job appears to be even easier. Travel to the country and soak up the language with little or no effort. When it’s time to return home, you are fluent and ready to accept a promotion for being bilingual.

Ok. It’s time to pinch yourself and wake up. That scenario doesn’t work unless you’re below the age of 5 and take in languages like you do video games.

You have a lot more to do in order to make your dream come true. It’s not difficult but it is more active than passive.

The truth is that the majority of students that travel overseas to learn Spanish or other languages come back with little or no improvement. They have high expectations when they leave but find that taking a leap to the “next level” is not as simple as they thought.

And it’s not the program’s fault in most cases. Study abroad programs fulfill their responsibility. They offer the students all they need to be comfortable and engaged. They solve problems, guide and encourage.

The problem lies with you, the learner. You have to be mentally prepared to enter a culture where you are not the top dog, the big cheese, the leader of the pack. In most cases, you’re the little brother who tags along. You know, the one who is always there but never has much to say.

Why waste all that money and time if that is the reality that awaits? No need to. Here are three suggestions for you to follow so that you get exactly what you’re looking for.

Tip #1 – Stay away from English speakers. Nothing can hinder your progress like hanging out with other English speakers. Forget this, “Oh, but he’s from England…I’ve never hung out with anyone from England before.” Plan on hanging out with someone from England once you become fluent. Not when you get there.

You must meet and hang out with native speakers as soon as you arrive. If you wait for the right time, it will never come. Do it immediately. Find a speaking partner, go to bars and meet people, take along an English speaking friend if they are as pumped up about learning Spanish as you. but get out there and make some new friends.

Tip #2 – Get used to eating humble pie. You may be the jokester at home but you are a wallflower in Spanish. Don’t get down on yourself. It won’t last forever. But learning is a process and this is one more step.

Don’t worry you can’t be the life of the party. Just be at the party for now and you’ll pick it up. It may take a month or two but what is that compared to years of being a fluent speaker?

Tip #3 – Keep studying. Why do you thinnk they call it “studying abroad.” Just because you’re in Spain or Mexico doesn’t mean you can leave your studies behind. Keep conjugating, keep a record of cool phrases and words, keep learning something new each day. The effect will be amazing.

I used to remember things I couldn’t say and look them up later. Then, I’d write them down. You can do it your way… just do it.

If you follow these strategies, I promise you will come back fluent and loving it. It is a real joy to speak a foreign language and you’ll know what I mean when you get there.

Just don’t throw your money and time away because it’s really neat to “hang with people from Alaska! or New Zealand! or wherever.

Studying abroad can get you to fluency faster than anything so do it right.
