Do you remember spending hours sitting in front of your stereo waiting for your favorite song to be played on the radio so that you could hit record on the cassette deck and record it? Do you remember when your best option for music was the radio and when people still listened to the radio for fun? Do you remember not downloading your music and, instead, running to the local record store and buying a whole album just so you could own that one song that was playing?

More people are remembering these things with fond nostalgia. Thanks to mp3 downloading programs, we are no longer required to buy an entire album and, instead can pick and choose which songs we want to hear from each artist. This has created more pressure on artists to write and record songs that will hit the top 40. If a song is not in the top 40 playlist, it will probably not be heard very often—if at all.

People complain because there are more commercials than there are songs being played on the radio today. Commercials are getting longer and more involved and many people insist that for every piece of actual music they hear on the radio, they will hear two or three commercials. What’s more, the same song can be heard playing on the radio ten or more times in the same day!

There was a time when the radio was the thing to turn on for discovering new music an up and coming artists. Bands would take their records and tapes down to the town’s local radio station and beg the DJ to play their work and the DJs had all of the power. Today the sales department has all of the power and playlists are computerized. A radio station can be run completely by computer!

This is why those mp3 downloading services are becoming more popular. The more popular these services get, the harder it will be to find a radio station that can still deliver the goods. Ironically, if people want their radio stations to improve, they should listen to the radio more often than they do their individual mp3 players.

The good news is that radio isn’t completely on its way out. This is largely because AM radio stations and talk radio programs are thriving. FM radio might be suffering, but the AM radio stations are becoming increasingly popular thanks to shocking talk radio show hosts who do their best to startle their listeners and keep the phone calls coming in. Talk radio was once largely something only “old” people listened to. Now everyone has at least one talk radio show that they are familiar with, whether it is political, sports oriented or fluff.

Radio can still have a great future and it will always be a great way to spread information. How well radio becomes, however, is up to consumers. The more they listen, the better radio’s offerings will be.

In this age of the internet and high technology, many people have forgotten about the good old CB Radio. You know, those devices which truckers talk on all day long. CB radios are not just for truckers anymore. They are an important and useful piece of equipment which should be part of any travel plans. A main reason to own one is they help to keep you safe while driving.

Free communication over the road is easy with a CB radio. You can use the radio to find traffic conditions such as any obstructions up ahead. Like the truckers do, you can use you CB to find out where the cops or speed traps are. Another great thing is that if you are tired while driving the CB can help you stay awake. Of course if you do become tired it is always best to pull over until you are well rested. However, engaging in conversations with your fellow travelers is wonderful for staying alert while driving a long distance.

When buying a CB radio, some things to consider are; Do you want it permanently attached to your vehicle or a portable one? If you plan on keeping your car or truck than the best thing to do is buy a quality one, such as a Cobra CB radio, which can be mounted in your vehicle. The mounted types have to be hard wired into your automobile and they come with an antenna which is attached to the outside.

Portable CB radios are very popular too and they are for people who want to carry it with them whether in or out of a vehicle. These handheld CB’s radios are very convenient for communicating and finding road info before you prepare for your trip. Some people have a mounted radio in their truck or car and then keep a portable one with them when they are out of their vehicle.

I know that we have all been accustomed to paying monthly cell phone, internet and satellite radio fees but the CB radio service is still free. Truckers and automobile drivers use them on a daily basis for finding useful information. Decide on the brand and type of CB Radio you will need and either select one which can be mounted in your car or a portable one. You will find that the CB radio is not just a thing of the past but an important safety and communication device for today.

If you are a little tired of your local AM and FM radio stations – same old, boring tunes – why not try a phenomenon that has been gradually coming into its own and has now well and truly arrived – internet radio. Unlike conventional radio, internet radio sends its signals through the internet rather than from transmitters that are fixed in one place sending out radio waves. This allows it to be truly global.
With quality second to none, internet radio can hold its own with the best audio around – and sound quality is vitally important for audio. A leading digital radio commentator explains: “Internet radio has the big advantage that the streams can use modern audio codecs.” This is what gives the sound quality an edge over the sound generated by, for example, DAB digital radio, another player on the block, and one being heavily promoted, especially in the United Kingdom, by such big names as the BBC. (In the United States, digital radio is recognized as superior to FM – it cuts out annoying static, and is especially useful in car radios – many listeners are now also tuning in to satellite radio.)
With more than 10,000 stations sending out music, chat and news from all over the world, internet radio gives listeners an enormous choice of listening material, from classical music through reggae to 80s rock and everything between. There is a growing number of web sites providing portals through which you can access the station of your choice. Just one example is shoutcast.com, which gives access to 8000 internet radio stations.
Anyone with a broadband connection can access internet radio via their computer, or buy specially built receivers that look just like radios – well, that’s what they are, after all – at around $200. At the Consumer Electronics Show 2009, manufacturing giant Sony announced that by 2011, 90 per cent of all its products would have internet connectivity. If they put Wi-Fi in their audio products, it will cost only a little more to enable those products to receive internet radio. In fact, many mobile phones are already able to receive internet radio through Wi-Fi or 3G – Nokia’s ‘smart phone’ comes with a standard radio application.
Two classy looking internet radios are the Pure Evoke Flow and Roberts Stream 202.
The Evoke Flow, launched late last year, has a smooth glossy black finish and looks not unlike your average small FM radio, but there the similarity ends. Using fingertip search you can find radio stations worldwide by typing in the first three letters of their name, or you can locate any music genre you want. This radio is portable and will also give you traditional FM and DAB radio, and access the music collection you have stored on your computer.
Roberts Stream 202 is a compact model, operated by batteries as well as mains powered, so you can take it anywhere. Information on a small screen in the top of the radio allows you to browse radio stations easily – it offers Wi-Fi and DAB/FM radio as well. You just need a broadband connection and a modem and/or router to get started.
Afghanistan to Zambia – listening to the world.

So, you made the decision to get satellite radio for your car. You bought your new satellite radio and now it’s time to get it all set up. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry – it’s actually much easier than you might expect.

You’ll first need to determine the type of connection your car uses. If your radio has an FM transmitter, then you can do a wireless connection. If not, you’ll need to directly connect the satellite radio to your car’s radio. Either way, it’s very simple to hook up.

When you open the box to your new satellite radio, you’ll see the main unit, mounting items, magnet roof antenna and an owner’s manual with an installation guide. These are the main items you’ll receive with a standard satellite radio; any others that are included will depend on the make and model of the radio you bought.

Steps for installing your satellite radio

The first step in installing your radio is to decide on where you’re going to mount the radio. Your radio mount can be attached to the windshield by suction cups, or to the dashboard with Velcro strips. If you’re mounting it to your dash, hold it in place at the location you want while making sure it’s free of obstacles before attaching the Velcro. Position the radio so that it’s within reach while you’re driving, but also out of the way of gearshifts and other controls. If you’re mounting it to the windshield, be sure it doesn’t obstruct your view of the road.

Next, plug in the power adapter to your cars cigarette lighter, and plug the other end into the satellite unit.

The antenna is last. The antenna needs to be mounted in the area on the outside of your car that has the least obstructions. Typically, the guide that comes with your satellite radio system will have detailed information for running the antenna cable into the car to your new system. The type of vehicle you have and any existing roof attachments will determine where you should place the antenna.

Setting up a wireless connection

If you want to set up a wireless connection, your new unit has to have an FM transmitter. Although this method will involve fewer cords coming from your new system, the quality of sound won’t be as good as you’d get with a direct connection.

The default FM station the transmitter uses is 88.1, which may not work for your area. You want to have a station that’s clear of any local radio stations – if you drive between two areas; it’s a good idea to find a station that’s free in both areas. Once you’ve determined the station you’ll use, save it to your presets so that your satellite radio can easily tune itself with just the touch of a button.

Using a direct connection

If your satellite radio doesn’t have an FM transmitter, you’ll be connecting it with either a cassette adapter for your car radio (lower quality), or through the AUX IN or LINE IN connections on your car radio (best quality). If your unit model doesn’t come with the cassette adapter or audio cable you need, stop by your local electronics store and purchase the one that works with your unit.

Insert the cassette adapter into your cassette player on your car stereo, or plug the audio cable into the AUX IN/LINE IN connection. Then, plug the other end into the AUDIO OUT/LINE OUT connection on the back of your satellite unit. Finally, set your car radio to the AUX setting to listen to your new satellite radio.

Listening to your satellite radio for the first time

After you have everything connected, turn on your new unit and follow the prompts on the display screen to finish the set up process. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to enjoy your new satellite radio for the first time!

The business of radio has been in some turmoil even before the economic downturn of 2008-2009. There’s a lot of consolidation, competition, and less advertising to go around. Add in satellite radio and internet radio to the mix with earthbound stations and the pie seems to be getting cut up into more pieces. The Radio industry will have to look to new technologies and innovation to get healthy again. iPhone applications are one of these new innovations to watch for.

Radio is moving in a new direction with streaming audio on iPhone apps. The mother of all radio iPhone apps would be Clear Channel’s “I Heart Radio” application, which feeds off of Clear Channel’s “I Heart Radio online streaming website of 750+ radio stations. Last count showed 150+ stations streaming via I Heart Radio on the iPhone. But streaming individual stations on a giant aggregator app like this can sometimes be slow with lengthy buffering times.

Another option is for a radio station, either land based or online or satellite to have its own dedicated iphone app. Why be one of hundreds or thousands of radio stations on someone else’s app when you can have your own custom Streaming Radio iPhone app with its own icon on your listener’s iPhone screen? Your radio station gets one step closer to your audience, and your listeners have direct icon access to your streaming broadcast! Add advertising to your Radio Station iPhone app for increased revenue and social networking features to build your listener community.

A recent count in the iTunes App Store showed over 40 radio stations of all kinds with their own iPhone apps for streaming their broadcasts. From large organizations like Public Radio to smaller niche online stations like Classical Philippines Radio, streaming broadcasts via iPhone apps.

The cost to develop a streaming radio app is very reasonable if the station already has an MP3 or other compatible stream. A basic streaming radio app can cost as low as $1200.00 with optional upgraded features possible, or the app can be upgraded at a later date. The initial development cost can be offset by adding advertising, sponsorships, selling playlist music through iTunes, and more.

Will iPhone applications turn the radio industry around? Not by themselves, but this new technology should be seriously considered by any radio station that’s seeking to position themselves for the new era of broadcasting.

One of the mediums of mass communication, radio, is a gadget, which is the wireless transmission of signals, modulated of electromagnetic waves, which has less frequency than that of light. In today’s world this radio has evolved into satellite radio (mainly an item of entertainment). Satellite Radio, which is also known as Pay Radio, Subscription radio, is a sort of digital radio, which is designed to receive signals, broadcasted by communication satellites. It has coverage of much wider geographical range, wider than other radio signals.

This type of radio is said to be using a band ranging from 1.4GHz to 2.3GHz in different places. It is said to transmit program-associated data abbreviated as PAD just like other radio services. Satellite Radio services is mostly commercial business body. They do not belong to private parties. SR services generally offer package of different channels, which requires subscription from the final users in order to get access to the channels. A monthly fee is charged for this subscription, which can be (according to American currency) in the area of $10. There are many providers of satellite radios in the world- SIRIUS, DELPHI, AUDIOVOX KENWOOD, PIONEER, etc. Among these the most noted and main Satellite Radio providers are WorldSpace in Europe, Asia, and Africa; XM Radio and Sirius in America. But XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio are considered the giants in the market. Apart from music channels they also have news, weather and sports channel also.

In this respect one should also know that satellite radios are different from AM (radio using Amplitude Modulation for its broadcasting) and FM (a broadcasting technology in which a radio uses frequency modulation mainly for broadcasting hi-fi sound on radio). The main difference is that satellite radios have highest varieties of programming than AM or FM radios.

For satellite radios one will find several kinds of receivers and the total cost for the radio depends upon that. The different types of receivers available are- home, car, portable, and computer. But it is suggested that if one wants minimum expense with maximum utilization it is best to go for home as long as you do not buy a car.

Almost all the producers and Satellite Radio service providers have options for cars, boats, RVs and home. Many are also offering walkman type Satellite Radios.

If you are a road warrior a satellite radio is the best way to assure access to your favorite genre no matter where you travel.

Question: A Brief Overview of Satellite Radio
Answer: Satellite radio means pay-radio or it may also be called a subscription radio. It is a little bit like the traditional one, but it has more programs than the traditional one does. It’s available in Africa, Asia and Europe due to the services provided by WorldSpace and in North America by Sirius and XM Radio.

Question: What are the advantages of Satellite Radio?
Answer: There is a wide variety of programs that includes: (rock, modern rock, alternative, classical, pop, hip-hop, country, jazz, electronic, Christian, Latin), weather, news, traffic, sports and entertainment channels—-no commercials—-.
Satellite Radio has a clean, digital signal and it is close to the quality of a CD. There are three basic types of radio turners.
